A Powerful Event when Liam Rosenior Shatters Obstacles

"Liam Rosenior is an excellent coach who knows the game back to front, which is what matters most.

"However, in my role as Chelsea's pioneering African heritage footballer, it would be dishonest to claim this news fails to move me."

Those are the words of the former Chelsea winger, who made his groundbreaking first appearance for the Blues' first team off the bench back in the spring of 1982.

This week, the club appointed RC Strasbourg boss Liam Rosenior, aged 41, as their next manager after the departure of manager Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are part of the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned ownership group which also controls Chelsea.

There have been a mere 12 of African or Caribbean heritage head coaches – not including individuals in temporary caretaker positions – in England's top flight since it began 34 in the past.

"One thing that impresses me regarding Rosenior is that he was raised and played not far from here, he knows the local fans," continued Canoville.

"Whenever youngsters see a figure like Rosenior in charge of their club, someone who looks like them, who's from their ends, from a family that champions equality… that's impactful demonstrating the path is there.

"Indeed, it is an enormous moment for the club, for London, for all aspiring individual dreaming big.

"But right now? We must support Rosenior, provide him with the necessary tools, and let the man do his work."

What Do the Data Show?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit became Chelsea head coach back in the nineties and became the top flight's inaugural African heritage manager.

Twelve years later, in 2008, Paul Ince became the first black English boss in the top flight after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the only other current Premier League boss from a minority ethnic background.

The scarcity of managers of colour throughout English football is matched by a lack of representation at executive level.

As per the BFP 2023's report, 43% of top-flight footballers come from African or Caribbean backgrounds.

However, research by Kick It Out revealed only 3.2% of board and senior leadership management teams at most Premier League clubs are held by people from ethnically diverse backgrounds.

At first-team coaching level, according to data provided by 11 clubs, the figure stands at two percent.

For all coaching positions – encompassing senior roles – from the same 11 clubs, the statistic is just five percent.

"He has undoubtedly broken barriers in terms of his appointment as the Chelsea manager, and as an organization, we want to see more of that," stated Kick It Out CEO Samuel Okafor.

"We know that there exists loads of talent that exists within black and underrepresented communities... they desire the opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities. It is imperative to continue to work hard to break those barriers once and for all."

Additionally, Rosenior is set to become one of only four full-time British managers currently in the Premier League – joining Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – a number that trails Europe's other major divisions regarding homegrown representation.

Sixteen out of twenty top-flight coaches in Italy are Italian, Eleven in La Liga are Spanish, Twelve in the Bundesliga are German and Ten in Ligue 1 in France.

The present Blues interim boss Calum McFarlane said: "I have no doubt every aspiring British coaches with a youth development pedigree are, in some way regardless of allegiance, rooting for Liam.

"It's truly inspirational to up-and-coming British academy coaches to witness someone land that job with that profile and everyone hopes he does highly successful."

'Let's not forget – his appointment is based on talent'

Leroy Rosenior, Rosenior Sr., had a career with the likes of Fulham, West Ham and Queens Park Rangers, with his coaching stint peaked with a five-month stint in charge of the third-tier club Brentford FC in 2006.

In 2019, he was awarded an MBE in that year's 2019 New Year Honours for his services in combating discrimination in football and wider society.

When Rosenior Jr retired from playing he followed his father's footsteps. He began writing a column for a national newspaper, where in 2017 he acknowledged the under-representation of black coaches. He pointed out that ethnicity does not determine ability arguing that roles should be given on merit.

He also made the view he has often stated: that significant under-representation results in a failure to understand of players with diverse ethnic and cultural heritage.

During an interview with The Athletic FC, he explained how his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, was labelled "difficult" and "passionate", but said he understood the Dutch international with Nigerian parentage. Emegha is set to join him with a move from Strasbourg to West London in July.

In subsequent newspaper articles, he also confessed to being "embarrassed" to hear a staff member make a homophobic slur. He vowed support for the Premier League's Rainbow Laces initiative and authored a public message to the former US President while he was in office, condemning his "overt" racism.

Rosenior has since built his reputation as a manager – initially with Hull City, then Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney said this week he was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" following their time together with Derby.

Rosenior said his farewells at Strasbourg on Tuesday morning before signing a long-term contract with the Blues.

The Blues had the top flight's pioneering African heritage boss in Gullit as well as the first black skipper named Paul Elliott.
